Mission Statement
School, in and of itself, is a mountain; rather, a series of peaks waiting to be conquered. Every student starts at the bottom... the beginning, with the same end goal in mind: to reach the top. The moment they take their first step, things begin to change. Whether as a result of their own actions, the actions of others, or no one at all, the journey to the top is changing. Step by step, each person wonders up their path of unforeseen challenges and adventures. Everyone's academic journey... their Mountain... is different; it will be different. There is more than one way to reach the top.
Students are struggling. In one area of academia or another, there is a slope that is too steep to transverse, a jagged cliff that has yet to be scaled, or a gaping riff that looks too big to jump. In these moments, students recall the words of others: "You prepared for this." "I told you what to do." "You shouldn't struggle." "Everyone can do it." And yet, they do not feel prepared, let alone supported. Standing with a backpack full of "resources" that should help, feels so heavy. A constant reminder of what they should know, but they do not.
It is okay to not know.
Students need something more. Math Mountain is that need. We aim to understand the type of student on the mountain and analyze the path they left behind and what lies ahead. We will help them approach each challenge and adventure with respect to who they are, how they feel, and what they are capable of (even if it has yet to be seen).
When we at Math Mountain were students ourselves, we saw, and as teachers today, we see.
We are all climbing.
How do you conquer the mountain? Take the first step. Let us help.
